This is a great toolkit for getting the most out of a sermon! I feel like it's sometimes easy to think about listening to a sermon as a passive exercise, but it really does require a level of intention, focus, and prayer to be able to fully absorb and apply what the Spirit is saying. I'm also really partial to the power of illustrations. Jesus spoke in parables for a reason!
I am happy you found this helpful, Jenece. You are right, Jesus spoke in parables for a reason! Thank you, always, for reading and engaging my writing, Jenece.
Thanks for sharing this insight! I was literally having this conversation earlier this week about what makes a sermon, with friends. This was really helpful and timely and I really enjoyed reading your ‘post sermon’ tips. From this read one new practice that I will implement is writing out a reflection question tied to the sermon, to answer and think about throughout the week ahead. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and encouragement on ways we can become more active when receiving the word.
Ryan! Thank you for reading. I commend you for talking about what makes a sermon with friends. I think those reflections sharpen us spiritually. Especially since we all listen to sermons differently. Glad to hear you found the practical tips helpful!
Very appropriate and relevant for today’s times. I found this to be very helpful to my own approach to the art work and biblically soundness of homiletics. Thank you for the compassionate reminder of the central idea of the “why” behind expository preaching.
Thank you for reading, KeKe! I am glad you found it helpful. The more I think and reflect on this topic, the more I realize that when we are preparing for preaching, we have to consider it also from the angle of how our sermons will be received by the hearer.
Thanks bro! I’d recommend recording it via GarageBand to edit the file and sound and upload it versus recording it directly via Substack (you can’t edit the file at all).
This was a great read! Thank you.
Thank you, bro. I appreciate it!
Thank you Pastor Sam.
I loved this article. I try to listen to our Pastors with focus on the Word.
I know you do well in it, too, Sister Lang. Thank you for reading, always. I am grateful!

Also, the audio is great! I’m gonna try this with my next essay.
